Title: Calibration and Validation of Empirical Models to Predict the Dynamic Modulus of Brazilian Asphalt Concrete Mixtures
Accession Number: 01663681
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Dynamic modulus (|E*|) has been adopted as a key parameter by modern mechanistic-empirical pavement design protocols to characterize the stiffness of asphalt concrete mixtures. Although several protocols have been developed in the literature to define the experimental testing procedures for the determination of |E*|, convenient predictive models have also been proposed as alternative to laboratory experiments. This paper evaluates three empirically-based predictive models for the context of Brazilian asphalt concrete mixtures. A database comprising constituent characteristics and experimental |E*| of 24 asphalt mixtures has been used to evaluate and calibrate the empirical equations. An additional simplified equation was also proposed and calibrated with the database information. The predictive potential of the four empirical equations was further evaluated by comparing the predicted and experimental |E*| of 10 additional mixtures that were not used in the calibration process. The results show that the original empirical equations provided at least fair predictions, whereas the calibrated equations provided excellent predictions of the experimental modulus values. It is expected that the calibrated empirical models become convenient and reliable tools to predict the |E*| with significant savings in the time and cost of processes associated to material selection and laboratory testing.
