Abstract: Particulate Matters 2.5 (PM2.5) emitted by vehicles would impact human’s health. Diffusion law of PM2.5 inside the urban street canyon is a research hotspot recently. The PM2.5 concentration of street canyon in different positions varies according to the street canyon enclosure ratio (SCER) and traffic flow states, and therefore people in different positions in the street canyon are affected differently. In this study, PM2.5 data of two selected street canyons in Beijing were collected and analyzed. Simulation experiment is conducted using the same spatial structure and meteorological conditions to compare with the on-site data and the results of the simulation experiment are credible as being verified with the on-site data. The airflow fields in a series of isolated street canyons, which have five SCER values and three types of traffic flow states, are studied numerically. The research found that the particles emitted by the vehicles cluster around the corner of leeward building and the heavy traffic flow states worsen the phenomenon in most cases. In addition, it is the most difficult for PM2.5 to spread out of the canyon when the SCER value is 2:1:2, while the SCER=2:2:1 is the easiest for PM2.5 to spread out. Finally, the pedestrians and residents in the leeward side expose to the highest PM2.5 concentration. Diffusion law found from this research will assist in designing the street canyon, controlling the traffic flow and developing measures to reduce harm of PM2.5 to the public.
