Title: Economizing Local Bridges with the FSB and Fostering Innovation for the Future

Abstract: Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has been continually refining their precast/prestressed flat slab type bridge structures since the mid-1940's, and recently released predesigned superstructure packages to assist local governments rapidly prepare and deliver project designs for affordable reliable structures. As the third most populated US state, and one of the early adopters of precast/prestressed technology in the USA, FDOT has a rich history of experience with these types of traditional bridge systems. This paper summarizes the evolution of the FDOT precast/prestressed slab beam bridge, highlighting the improvements and missteps that have led to the latest generation Florida Slab Beam (FSB), including input from local and international experiences, and the significant benefits of standardization and coordination with prestress producers, contractors and municipal agencies. Additionally, incorporation some of the latest advancements in materials technology including, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)-composite prestressing and reinforcing, Ultra-High Performance and Fiber-Reinforced Concrete technologies are be discussed.
