Title: Utilizing stage-based behavioral theory to model the process of bikeshare adoption
Accession Number: 01663300
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper develops a nested logit model drawing on the stage-of-change framework from the Transtheoretical model to study bikeshare adoption. Using newly collected survey data from the U.S, the model illustrates how both objective and subjective factors influence the probability of moving from early (Precontemplation) to advanced (Action-Maintenance) stages of bikeshare use. An important finding is that many factors have a non-uniform impact on stage transitions suggesting that care is needed in developing policy guidance based on the model results. The findings reveal pronounced elasticities for local identity and norms, with a strong potential to guide bikeshare membership decisions.
