Abstract: To make informed decisions about sustainable urban freight distribution there is a need to examine the trade off between distribution cost and environmental pollution. This paper formulates and solves a variant of the pollution routing problem on urban road networks that integrates several attributes associated with fuel consumption, and encompasses important characteristics of urban road networks. The problem that is introduced is equivalent to a multi-objective time and load dependent fleet size and mix green vehicle routing problem with time windows, multiple trips, and flexible departure times, which accounts for both business and environmental objectives. Following the introduction of the corresponding mixed integer programming formulation of the proposed problem, a network reduction technique and a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm are developed as the solution framework and applied on a set of benchmark instances. The results of computational experiments suggest that the proposed method can approximate the efficient frontier of the problem. The presented set of solutions on the efficient frontier can assist the decision maker to make a choice with regard to the trade-off between cost and environmental pollution.
