Title: Optimized Local and Express Train Headways for Irregular Station Spacings and Heterogeneous Demand
Accession Number: 01659988
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Offering express train services in addition to local trains that stop at all stations may help move passengers more efficiently in rail transit systems. In this study the authors develop a method for minimizing the total cost of operating a rail transit route, including the costs to operators and users by optimizing the headways of express and local trains. The method is applicable for irregular demand patterns and spacings of express and local stations. A case study based roughly on the MTA New York City Transit 7 Line , on which express trains run on a separate track in the peak direction and return as local trains on local tracks, is used to demonstrate the methods and examine the effects of some factors.
