Title: What Do European Tourism Demand Surveys Tell About Long Distance Travel?
Accession Number: 01658943
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The knowledge of long distance travel is presently limited. The lack of data is an important reason for the few studies of long distance travel from a transport point of view. Eurostat is, however, collecting annual survey data about tourism demand from all member states. Due to missing detailed information on destination and distance, the data is not in full accordance with needs for data for transport research. Furthermore, the quality is varying and data is only available as tabulated macro data. Nevertheless, the authors have found the surveys useful, since they cover 30 countries and a 15 years' time series for some of the countries. The main conclusion is that the European countries seem to fall into three groups, 1) the Middle and Northern European countries with a high travel frequency and a high share of the population travelling abroad, 2) the Mediterranean countries with a low share of people travelling abroad and more having domestic holidays, and 3) the new member states that have a higher travel frequency than the latter group but lower than the first group due to a smaller share of the population travelling abroad for longer periods. The analyses unveil a long run income elasticity of 1.8 for all countries and well above one for all three country groups. A saturation level with around 90% of the population travelling abroad annually with around two long journeys on average is suggested, based on the countries with the highest travel activity. To this should be added weekend trips that probably do not have a saturation level.
