Abstract:

This study presents a first-of-its kind survey-based analysis of the dynamic shared mobility landscape in India. The study analyzes the users of shared modes (specifically hailed and ride-sourced services), how and why they choose their mode, and how shared mobility varies 4 across cities. Eight intercept surveys (two per city) were administered in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai in Spring 2017, collecting demographic and trip information from users of hailed and ride-sourced services. The findings suggest that local context is crucial to properly understand the shared mobility situation in India. Factors specific to each city can result in different user profiles for hailed and ride-sourced consumers, different alternative transport decisions, and different reasons for choosing a mode of transport. However, there are also some key similarities across cities: shared mobility appears to be male-dominated and provides a critical mobility option for a population with limited vehicle availability. The evidence also suggests that while shared mobility modes can be in direct competition with each other, they can also compete significantly with other urban mobility options such as public transit. Overall, the data indicates that policy-making at the individual city level is necessary to properly manage India’s evolving shared mobility landscape. Future avenues of research are proposed to further India-specific knowledge about shared and urban mobility.
