Title: Modeling Long-Distance Route Choice Using Mobile Phone Call Detail Record Data: a Case Study of Senegal

Abstract: Over the last two decades, Global Positioning System (GPS) data has been a popular choice for modelling route choice behaviour. However, such studies are expensive, thereby leading to limited sample sizes and an increased risk of sampling bias. In order to address this problem, the authors investigate the potential of using mobile phone call detail record (CDR) data for route choice modelling. CDR data has time-stamped locations of phone usage activities for millions of users and has been successfully used for modelling trip patterns, origin-destination (O-D) matrices, and other purposes, but to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first research that uses CDR data for developing econometric models of route choice. The developed framework is operationalized for modelling long-distance route choice behaviour using anonymized CDR data from Senegal. The geocoded call records are combined with the national road network data and the chosen routes of the users for selected O-D pairs are identified. The data is further augmented by road condition data across the country and advanced discrete choice models are developed to quantify the sensitivity of the travellers towards these factors. The estimation results are intuitive and capture the expected sensitivities towards the distances, road conditions and overlapping routes. The research serves as a proof-of-concept that mobile phone CDR can be successfully used to model route choice behaviour and can be particularly useful in the context of developing countries where there are no other reliable sources of data for route choice modelling.
