Abstract: The negative outcomes of ingrained gender socialization are evident in many contemporary societies. For example, women spend more time on home care and child rearing tasks than men do. An important effect of gender-based roles, hence, is smaller time budgets for women compared to men. Additionally, in some developing countries women are exposed to daily sexual harassment during day-to-day travel. With the maturing of a middle class in the developing countries, however, women are gaining financial independence. This has translated to gender-specific travel preferences, which remain understudied. This paper asks: how do gender-based preferences about time budgets and risk averseness express themselves in the travel choices of young adults? The research relies on purposive sampling where participants (n = 154), at various stages of their young adult years were recruited for gender-separated focus groups (n = 21). The sample was comprised of graduate students and early/mid-career professionals in Mumbai. The aim was to explore reasons for differences in travel mode choice and vehicle-type choice between women and men. The findings show that the need for time and physical safety are expressed differently by both genders, with women speaking more about safety than about time constraints. The data suggests that even financially independent women remain psychologically distant from actionable choices due to gendered social roles. This paper proposes a socio-psychological framework for systematically investigating and expanding transportation research using a gendered lens.
