Abstract:

Using transportation content in Yelp reviews, this study investigates how transportation mode choice is influenced by proximity to rail transit, as it varies by city and activity purpose. The authors use textual analysis to extract mode choice information for non-work activities in seven cities across North America and Europe. A modeling framework using mixed-effect and binomial logistic models highlights the factors associated with transportation choices, when accessing destinations. The analysis shows how different modal behaviors, whether transit, walking, driving or parking, are differentially affected by proximity to urban rail networks. The results indicate that for travel by rail transit, activity type is often a more important determinant of mode choice than proximity to the rail network. The predicted probabilities of recommendations to travel by other modes are also strongly associated with activity type, as well as varying across cities. The results suggest that while “rules of thumb” about ideal distance to transit can be useful in local planning and design, the relationship between mode choice and proximity to a transit network is complex. Mode choice variability by distance can serve as an indicator of how transit and surrounding built environments reflect on the overall effectiveness of a transit network and surrounding development. More broadly, social media data like Yelp reviews provide planning researchers with the means to investigate human mobility and measure transportation system performance in ways not possible with standard travel survey data.
