Abstract:

To forecast a truck’s operating speed along upgrade sections on freeways more reasonably, a vehicle performance model (VPM) was proposed that can be used in both China and the U.S. based on vehicle dynamics. The VPM considered the effects of tractive effort, aerodynamics, grade, and rolling resistance when the vehicle was climbing along the upgrade sections. Then, according to Survey and Statistics of Chinese Freeway Transportation Volume (CFTV), a calculated typical truck (CTT) in China was selected. Last, using data collected in the G6 Jingzang Expressway Hohhot to Jining Section, the VPM was demonstrated. The results show that the VPM can predict the operating speed of a truck along upgrade sections on freeways in China. The absolute error of the VPM is less than 5%, with high accuracy. Similarly, the authors can get the current typical truck in China with a weight-to-power ratio (WPR) of 141 kg/kw and 198kg/kw.
