Abstract:

The accuracy of vehicle trajectory is having the potential impact on estimating various macro and microscopic traffic flow parameters. Most of the available trajectory reconstruction methods failed to preserve the actual vehicle dynamics corresponding to the longitudinal and the lateral dimensions of the vehicle movement. The lateral dynamics are extensive in the heterogeneous traffic streams due to the no-lane disciplined behaviour. The lateral dynamics along with the longitudinal dynamics in the no-lane based traffic streams necessitates a separate reconstruction method for heterogeneous traffic streams. The present study proposes a novel approach to reconstruct the trajectory data obtained from heterogeneous, no-lane based traffic stream by considering the longitudinal and the lateral dynamics. The basic tool of the reconstruction considered in the present study is the Locally Weighted Polynomial Regression (LWPR). The results show that the proposed method reconstruct the vehicle trajectories in such a way that the actual distance travelled by the vehicle, speed and acceleration are internally and physically consistent. The method also ensures the consistency of the position, speed and the acceleration in longitudinal and lateral dimensions.
