Abstract: The new approaches to mobility in major cities around the world face big challenges because public transport requires priority but the private vehicle continues to have a significant importance in modes of transportation. One of the main factors that condition the mobility in cities is semaphoric management. Poor regulation may have significant congestion consequences. This study is an answer to the question of how to give priority to an increasingly demanded for means of transport in cities such as the tram but without harming the other modes of transportation. A mixed technique formed by an optimization model and a simulation scenario is developed to establish traffic lights settings that guarantee a good commercial speed for tram while preserving adequate levels of mobility for the rest of modes. The implementation of a particular case for the Spanish city of Barcelona where the City Council is working on the introduction of a new tram line shows the usefulness of the model presented.
