Title: Evaluating Student Perception of Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Research
Accession Number: 01661441
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper describes the objectives, the selection criteria, and the funding mechanism of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program initiated in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University. Twenty eight students participated in the program between 2012 and 2015. The students were surveyed to elicit opinion about their SURF experience and view of undergraduate research. The student response and attitude towards the program were overwhelmingly positive. The students recommended integration of a research elective in the civil and environmental engineering curriculum. The students identified learning concepts outside of the classroom and solving open ended problems as the two most important aspects of the research experience.
