Title:

Evaluating the Relationship Between Decision Sight Distance and Stopping Sight Distance

Abstract:

The paper introduces implementation of highways' stopping sight distance (SSD) and decision sight distance (DSD) for interurban highways. The paper reviews and documents the developments of the highway design parameters and constructed models of the SSD and DSD in Israel, specifically the parameters of perception reaction time (PRT) and deceleration coefficient required for SSD, and DSD three model elements: pre maneuver distance, braking distance, and distance traveled during maneuver operation. This overview is a perquisite for modeling and calibrating the relationship between DSD and SSD. This direct relationship simplifies the process of evaluating the decision sight distance based on stopping sight distance record without the need of strenuous estimation of the DSD model parameters. The paper focuses first on open roadways and proposes adjusted DSD-SSD models for road tunnels as well.
