Title: Ride-Sourcing Services: A Mode Choice Analysis Accounting for Interalternative Correlation and Unobserved Heterogeneity
Accession Number: 01659528
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The transportation industry has witnessed a rapidly growing interest in ride-sourcing services over the past few years. There exist conflicting perspectives about the impact of these new services on the ridership of other travel modes, specifically public transportation. Therefore, there is a significant need for understanding the potential changes in people’s travel behavior in the presence of such shared services. This study aims to investigate people’s mode choice behavior using a recent stated preference survey conducted in Chicago metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, a random parameters nested logit model is developed to simultaneously account for possible inter-alternative correlations and unobserved heterogeneity. The results suggest that a wide range of socio-economic characteristics, trip attributes, and variables indicating travelers’ opinion about shared mobility services are key determinants of their mode choice decision. The analysis also consists of developing a multinomial logit and a nested logit model to assess the performance of the proposed model. The results indicate that the random parameters nested logit model outperforms its counterparts in terms of goodness-of-fit.
