Abstract:

High Speed Rail technology is globalized, but it is not unique and must be adapted to the country it is being built in. Two Authority teams, one in California and one in Sweden, are responsible for the next step in their countries transport history: introducing sustainable High Speed Rail to the transport system. 6 This paper is a summary of some lessons learned from a six months international transfer from Sweden to the U.S during an opportunity to join the California High Speed Rail team. The aim of the transfer was share knowledge and build bridges between two countries and two teams. This experience and lessons learned from the transfer can be used in all types of transportation collaborations between U.S and Sweden (and Europe), and in the development of High Speed Rail systems. U.S. and Sweden may contrast in many ways. Besides the contrasts, a range of opportunities for cooperation was revealed during the transfer. Transportation development is in many ways facing the same challenges over the world. The largest differences are a result of our history, demography and geography. With respect to dissimilarities, the two teams can for example, share top class knowledge about technical features and approaches to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The California High Speed Rail is committed to delivering a sustainable system which serves as a model for sustainable rail infrastructure; Swedish people yearly travel 18 times longer by train than Americans in an attractive rail system. The opportunities to share and learn are tremendous.
