Abstract:

Xi’an is a metropolis with 8.7 million population that is located approximately 740 miles southwest of Beijing. The city is rapidly growing and traffic congestion has increased along with deterioration of its air quality. The current rail transit master plan is to construct 17 metro lines by 2030. Three metro lines (Lines 1, 2, and 3) have now opened and another four are under construction in addition to the phase 2 extension of Line 1. The metro network now has the total length of 91 km and 64 stations. By 2021, there will be seven metro lines (Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9) with total length of 243.2 km. Prior to the opening of Line 3 in November 2016, there were typical uncertainties about the relative ridership success of Line 3 and how it might impact the ridership of the first two metro lines. This is particularly important for Xi’an, as new metro lines are quickly being added to the network and understanding the characteristics of existing network ridership is crucial for a well-designed system and to its long-term success. Understanding ridership changes also provides important lessons for other cities that are expanding their metro systems.
