Abstract: Mastic asphalt pavements are a special construction method, which is particularly used in Germany for high traffic volume motorways. They are well known for their long service life. For the delivery of the mixture to the construction site special thermo-insulated trucks are needed. Due to its high amount of filler and binder the mixture includes a surplus of mortar. Therefore, during the construction process special types of paving screeds are needed. The surface properties of mastic asphalt layers, such as friction, abrasion resistances and surface reflectivity, particularly at the initial service life of a pavement, are highly influenced by the type and quality of the chippings used. So far, the effectiveness of aggregate materials concerning the surface layer properties with respect to long-term performance has not been investigated up to now. This study was carried out in order to investigate the significant influences of aggregates in the mastic mixture on the friction properties under high traffic volume during service life as well as to investigate whether the chippings remain crucial for the surface properties. The analysis included different measurements of skin resistance (SKM, GripTester, SRT), coarse texture measurements with the Sand Patch Test, quantification of chippings and investigations on the mastic asphalt mixtures. The results showed that high quality aggregates with high polishing resistance should be used to ensure a long pavement life (> 20 years). Therefore, using cheaper and low polish resistant aggregates in asphalt mixtures for the safe of cost savings are not worthwhile.
