Abstract:

This chapter discusses options in materials-handling methods appropriate for tunnel construction. General systems for removing excavated material include rubber-tired trucks, rail mounted equipment, conveyors and hoisting. Prime considerations in the choice of a materials-handling system are economy, reliability, extensibility, and redundancy. Directions for future research are discussed.
