Abstract:

The last economic recession impacted many aspects of lives including people’s transportation. However, its negative effects vary considerably not only by subgroups of people but also by spending levels. The objective of this paper is to determine the impact of the recession on the transportation spending distribution of poor and middle income households with a focus on female householders. The authors use cross sections of data from 2004 to 2009 on households from Consumer Expenditures Survey to estimate multivariate quantile regression models of the transportation expenditure distribution at the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles and the different factors contributing to changes in transportation spending at these levels. Changes in three main components of transportation spending (vehicle purchasing and ownership, vehicle operating, and public transportation) are also considered. The results indicate that transportation spending decreases significantly during the recession for the higher percentiles of the expenditure distribution (50th, 75th and 90th percentile) as compared to the lower percentiles of expenditures (10th, and 25th percentile). Female householders were spending less than their counterparts overall for all percentiles. During the recession, this inequality increased. Obviously, transportation spending depends on many other factors such as vehicle ownership, vehicle purchase, age, household size, race, gasoline prices and other socio demographic factors. The authors investigate the impact of these variables on the transportation expenditure distribution during the great recession.
