Title: Properties of Asphalt Pavement Layers Through Field Instrumentation at I-40

Abstract: Variation of unbound layer modulus and damping ratio within different layers of asphalt pavement is shown in this study. The study illustrates among temperature, moisture and stress dependency on the asphalt concrete (AC) layer which is the significant factor for changing base and subbase modulus. The data of this study are collected from the field instrumentation section on the I-40 near Albuquerque, New Mexico. To identify the significant factor in unbound layer (base and subbase) modulus variation, falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test data along with pavement responses were analyzed from February 2013 to January 2014. From the ANOVA test on the field instrumented data, it was found that temperature is the most significant factor for unbound layer modulus variation. Damping ratios of different pavement layers were also obtained from this instrumentation section data. Horizontal axial strain (longitudinal and transverse direction) at the bottom of the hot mix asphalt (HMA) layer and pressure at the base, subbase and subgrade layers were also collected under the FWD test loads at two different seasons, February 2015 and June 2015. From the analyzed data it was observed that damping ratio in the HMA layer increases with temperature. Difference was also observed among the damping ratios in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Base and subbase damping ratios were also found to be dependent on temperature due to the presence of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). However, no effect of temperature was observed on the damping ratio of the subgrade.
