Abstract:

In recent years, the impacts of app-based ride (ABR) services on taxi industry have been widely discussed. However, the impacts on of ABRs on traditional taxi market remains controversial. This paper used taxi operation data to explore whether or not app-based ride services have significant impacts on taxi industry in Yiwu, which is a typical small city in China. With using the global positioning system (GPS) dataset, taxi meter dataset and the average of drivers’ monthly income dataset from taxi operator, three indicators – mileage utilization ratio (MUR), vehicle-rent fees (VRF) and average of driver’ monthly income (ADMI) were developed for exploring the impacts of ABR services. It was found that the app-based ride services had significant impacts on taxi industry. The analysis results in this paper can help policymakers understand the impacts of app-based ride servers better, and also it can help to promote the effectiveness of (de-) regulation on taxi and app-based ride services. In addition, this study provides an international perspective for understanding the role of app-based ride services, and is a useful reference to researchers and policymakers in other countries.
