Title: Linear Feature-based Structural Deformation Measurement Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning Data and Images
Accession Number: 01627712
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The deformation of structures is an important indicator to define the structural health of bridges. Photogrammetry is an image-based technique that has been used to monitor such structural deformations among many others. But the traditional photogrammetric approach requires access to the structure to establish targets or control points in multiple locations. The methods that require access to the structure are typically laborious and less safe. Hence this paper presents a noncontact remote sensing technique that uses both Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) data and images. The requirement of control points for is overcome by using TLS data. Due to discrete distribution of points in TLS data, identifying control points is a challenging task. Hence, this research paper demonstrates a method of extracting linear features that are visible in both data sets. In order to accommodate the linear features in the traditional point-based photogrammetric equations, a new feature-based photogrammetric methodology is introduced. The validity of the methodology is tested with two wooden beams (pine and oak) in a lab environment. The computed structural deformations are compared with deflectometer and point-based and its feasibility to monitor the deformation of prototype timber structures is discussed.
