Title: Taxi Users’ Perception in Bogotá: Factors Affecting Accident Rates
Accession Number: 01630363
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Traffic accidents are an important cause of death worldwide. In Colombia, despite the fact that accident rates have decreased in the past few years, taxi accidents continue to be a major issue because the service is continuous during the whole day. In order to analyze the causes of such accidents, this study focuses on taxi users who are in direct contact with the service and can therefore provide a unique perspective. Thus, the main objective is to analyze taxis road safety through users’ perception regarding factors that influence accidents. Such analysis is carried out by using data from the Mobility Observatory of Universidad de Los Andes and the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá, and by applying a survey to 621 taxi users in the city. The study finds that in general taxi users do not feel safe in this transportation mode, but comparably feel safer in alternative transportation modes such as Uber. Also, the results reveal that there are significant differences between the users´ perception of the causes of accidents and the reported causes. In particular, there is evidence that causes that are more perceived as risky, such as speeding and not stopping on stop signs and red lights, are not the most observed in real life.
