Abstract:

Several research studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of Controller Actuated Beacons (CABs) near isolated high-speed signalized intersections, indicating that CABs are generally effective in reducing accidents. However, while drivers approaching the intersection during flashing CABs might anecdotally accelerate or decelerate depending on their time/distance to the stop bar, the literature lacks guidance on quantifying this behavior and accounting for it in the use of Dilemma Zone (DZ) protection systems in the presence of CABs. This paper focuses on analyzing and identifying key variables that can result in a change in a vehicle trajectory as it approaches intersections with flashing CABs, and develop guidelines for the use of DZ-protection systems in these cases. The findings of this work include identifications of conditions when drivers accelerate and get trapped in DZ due to the CAB operation and provide guidance on placement of CABs and change in DZ-protection boundaries to avoid these situations.
