Title: A Lateral Movement Decision Model for Powered Two-Wheelers in a Developing Country
Accession Number: 01629173
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The maneuvering of Power-Two-Wheelers (PTWs) is non-lane-based, and the interactions between PTWs and other vehicles in mixed traffic are complicated. Previous studies formulate the behaviors of PTWs using simulation or empirical models at arterials and interactions. The objective of this paper is to shed light on the modeling of PTWs. A dynamic discrete choice model that captures the lateral shifting behaviors of PTWs is proposed. The model is based not only on the position of surrounding vehicles but also on riders’ perception of expected future traffic conditions. Moreover, significant variables such as distance and speed of vehicles in the proximity of PTWs are treated as state variables. The model is calibrated with microscopic vehicle trajectory data collected from a four-lane urban arterial in Taipei, Taiwan. The results show that when taking the dynamic nature of the problem into account a better model fit is obtained. The findings of this study can be useful to enhance the existing microscopic traffic simulation of mixed traffic with a large amount of PTWs. The deriving tool can be used for the improvement of road geometries and for the definition of control strategies for mixed traffic flows.
