Abstract:

There is a natural interaction between pedestrians and light rail transit services. Consequently, the planning, design, and operations of light rail transit systems should devote significant resources to promote the safe flow of pedestrians over grade crossings of the rail transit system. This paper reports the findings of a comprehensive research study sponsored by TCRP on treatments available for pedestrian crossings of rail transit services. A total of 34 treatments were identified in the research with selected innovative treatments discussed in greater detail in this paper. A case study of station design for visually-impaired pedestrians is also presented, highlighting key concerns that exist in the station environment. The detailed findings of the research project summarized in this paper are presented in Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Report 175: Guidebook on Pedestrian Crossings of Public Transit Rail Services. Planners, engineers, and managers involved with light rail transit systems are encouraged to consult the findings of this study to glean insight on treatments available for pedestrian crossings of light rail transit.
