Title: Car Drivers’ Driving Styles and the Willingness to Hand Over Driving Tasks: An Explorative Study
Accession Number: 01623767
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper presents the results of an exploratory study investigating the relationship between car drivers’ driving styles and their willingness to hand over certain driving tasks to an autonomous vehicle. Based on the evaluation of different statements, for each respondent a main driving style is determined. Seven different driving styles were included in the study: angry driving style, anxious driving style, careful driving style, dissociative driving style, high-velocity (fast) driving style, patient driving style, and risky driving style. Car drivers were also invited to state their willingness to hand over driving tasks. The following driving tasks were investigated in more detail: controlling speed, accelerating and decelerating, selecting route, and positioning on the road. The data regarding the statements and the willingness to hand over driving tasks were gathered using an online questionnaire. The data of 583 respondents were used in the analyses. The influence of driving style and personal characteristics is investigated using multinomial logistic regression analysis. It appears that all distinguished types of driving styles and gender significantly influence car drivers’ willingness to hand over driving tasks. Most influential driving styles are the ‘careful’ and ‘dissociate’ driving style.
