Title: Assessment of Pedestrian Transit in Urban Areas - Illustrated with a case study in Utrecht, the Netherlands
Accession Number: 01623038
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The analysis of urban land use models for the transition to sustainable mobility is a complex task requiring powerful yet flexible modelling tools. In this paper, an activity-based approach is combined with agent based modelling to allow exploring the effect of land use intensity, non-automobile oriented infrastructure and traffic flow on mobility patterns. The model is used for the decision making process in the redevelopment of the New Centre district of Utrecht (the Netherlands) to foster sustainable transport modes and balance land use across the district to include the Jaarbeurs exhibition centre. Various demand and land use scenarios are defined and compared in this paper. Urban land use and space utilisation are linked with the aim of increasing the attractiveness of the Utrecht New Centre district, and integrating it with the surrounding areas. The results illustrate the distance travelled by agents, occupancy levels of various building types and pedestrian flow in the area throughout a day. The proposed framework is developed in a software tool which can be used by local stakeholders to integrate diverse urban plans and gain insight into challenges of sustainable mobility practices.
