Abstract:

With a rapidly growing demand for technologically savvy workers and a diminishing pool of people entering the labor market, the prospects for recruiting aviation professionals pose a new challenge that requires new approaches. This article takes a closer look at the demand for airline pilots, aircraft maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, and airport operations personnel. By 2024 it is projected that 203,815 personnel will be needed to fill these positions. Approaches for attracting candidates include ab initio flight training, organizational outreach, and sponsored education. This article also talks about the Collegiate Training Initiative, the impact of opening the recruiting process to the general public, and the FAA Academy.
