Data and information technology are not only transforming the way that people use buses but also the way that bus systems are being planned to serve riders more effectively. Operational data and other information routinely collected by bus systems are being put to work in new ways to assist bus riders and system planners. This article looks at the types of data collected, data challenges, data analysis tools, the General Transit Feed Specifications (GTFS), and next steps in utilizing open-source data.
