Abstract:

Airports in the United States are required by law to improve runway safety areas (RSAs) and comply with new Federal Aviation Administration design standards by the end of 2015. San Francisco International Airport recently used guidance from two Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) reports, Improved Models for Risk Assessment of Runway Safety Areas (ACRP Report 50) and Analysis of Aircraft Overruns and Undershoots (ACRP Report 3) to evaluate safety alternatives and develop cost-effective alternatives to meet these federal safety requirements.
