Abstract:

Most studies on intermodal terminal operation focus on container ports. However, for the differences in operation procedures and rules, rail-truck intermodal terminals also need to be concerned. This paper addresses the outbound containers loading problem for improving the energy efficiency in Chinese rail-truck intermodal terminals. By analyzing and determining key influence factors of energy efficiency in outbound containers loading operations, an optimization model is proposed to minimize the empty crane move time and container reshuffling in handling task. A genetic algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal loading sequence. Computational experiments on a specific rail-truck intermodal terminal in China are conducted to test the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
