Abstract:

The demand for skilled transportation professionals who can complement their traditional areas of expertise with a broader, multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary perspective is higher now than ever before in the United States. Certificate programs that offer a comprehensive curriculum in transportation systems, design, policy and management can play a crucial role in fulfilling this need by providing a substantive base of knowledge to students through traditional courses and applied studio projects. However, there are virtually no identifiable studies to date that examine the role of transportation certificate programs in attracting and preparing students for the transportation profession. This paper addresses this gap by providing a template for developing a transportation certificate program based on the experiences of Texas A&M University’s Graduate Certificate in Transportation Planning (CTP) Program. In addition to discussing curriculum development, certificate implementation, and marketing and recruiting efforts, a program evaluation survey of CTP graduates was conducted to understand what influenced their decision to pursue a transportation certificate, how large of a role the CTP played in attracting them to the university, and how valuable was the CTP in preparing them for a career in transportation planning and related fields. Based on these findings, specific recommendations and guidelines for implementing a transportation certificate program are offered that may be of value to other universities and institutions seeking to develop a similar program.
