Abstract:

Bridges are key components of infrastructure that are vulnerable to earthquakes and many are undergoing retrofit or complete replacement. Rigorous seismic design of bridges and informed retrofit decisions are indispensable. A popular bridge retrofitting technique uses Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), for its high strength and stiffness, to wrap the bridge columns at the expected plastic hinge locations. While seismic design of new bridges requires capacity design checks according to the latest codes and standards, such capacity checks can be overlooked when it comes to retrofitting existing bridges. The objective of this study is to highlight the effectiveness of CFRP column jackets and its effect on the bridge superstructure in case of a retrofit overdesign that might not satisfy the capacity design checks. Experimental research was undertaken to test two large-scale as-built and retrofitted reinforced concrete column-bent cap-box-girder subassemblies under combined gravity and bidirectional cyclic and hybrid simulation lateral loading, respectively. The study found that CFRP column jacketing is an efficient retrofitting technique. However, the amplified demands on the bridge superstructure due to the enhanced column capacity can migrate the damage to the bridge superstructure, particularly the bent cap in the transverse direction, if proper capacity design check is not performed.
