Title: Approach to Infiltration Modeling for Sealed Joints in Concrete Pavement Design

Abstract: The primary purpose for sealing joints in rigid pavement, beside limiting incompressibles, is to prevent or reduce the amount of water infiltrating into pavement structure. It is well accepted that the presence of moisture in a pavement structure is a contributor to a variety of governing distress types that eventually deteriorate the integrity of a pavement structure and decrease its service life. Effectiveness of joint sealants to protect any type of concrete pavement against water infiltration has been of interest for many years. Over the past 10 to 15 years, pavement infiltration has been at the heart of both formal and informal studies on the effect of joint sealing funded by State Agencies, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) as they may have pertained to the “to seal or not to seal” discussion revolving around the maintenance of joints in concrete pavements. The results of these studies have been limited to some extent due to the use of infiltration models more applicable to permeable pavement surfaces rather than pavements with joints. To this end, a field testing program was carried out at the Riverside Campus of Texas A&M University to study the effectiveness of different sealant types to limit drainage related infiltration of the joint under different joint openings and bonding conditions. Results indicated that moisture infiltration through a sealed joint depends on the type of sealant, the pressure head, and the joint opening. Unsealed joints had significantly higher flow rates compared to joints with damaged sealants. The test results in this study have also demonstrated the effect of sealant condition on joint seal drainage performance.
