Abstract:

In order to reduce the frequency and severity of wrong-way driving (WWD) events, it is important to understand how drivers comprehend and react to WWD countermeasures and warning messages. A survey was conducted on Florida drivers regarding WWD countermeasures and events. 44% of survey respondents correctly identified the DO NOT ENTER symbol (not the standard sign used in the United States, just the symbol without the text), 48% correctly identified the purpose of a wrong-way pavement arrow, and 69% knew that white edge lines are used on the right side of ramps. Over 90% of respondents wanted to be warned about WWD events via dynamic message signs or in-vehicle devices. Respondents were also asked how they would respond to notification of a WWD event and their reactions were modeled using a decision tree. This model showed that older drivers who preferred to be warned about WWD events were more likely to pull over compared to younger drivers and drivers who did not want to be warned. Survey respondents were also shown videos of two different Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies to reduce WWD. 72% preferred the use of two sets of WRONG WAY signs with Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) rather than one set of LED WRONG WAY signs to warn wrong-way drivers on ramps. Both of these technologies are currently detecting and alerting wrong-way drivers in Florida. Images have been captured of wrong-way drivers turning around due to these devices, showing that they are making highway travel safer.
