Abstract:

This study combined the theories of car use motivations, self-determination and travel socialization to establish an extended model for understanding people’s car usage in Taiwan, which is verified by an empirical investigation with a sample of 440 participants. Structure Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to analyze the relationships between latent variables in this study. Results show that instrumental, symbolic, extrinsic affective motivations, intrinsic affective motivations, and perceived parental attitude towards car usage would affect car usage significantly. Among these, symbolic motivation is the most important factor to attract people using a car. Perceived parental attitude (PPA) toward car usage is the second prominent affecting factor for car usage. A further investigation reveals that experience of being chauffeured by car, gender, and age would influence individual motivations. Possible reasons for various values of each latent variable have been discussed and suggestions are provided in this study. These study results could help transportation professionals to understand car usage and provide the guidance for the policy making of transportation management
