Title: Bluetooth Travel Time/Speed Data Analysis for Houston-Galveston Regional Transportation Study
Accession Number: 01593534
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This research collected and analyzed Bluetooth travel time and speed data for the Houston–Galveston regional transportation study. The Bluetooth data collection covered 70 arterial routes totaling more than 1800 directional miles in the regional urban network. The research conducted sample size analysis to determine a proper width of time window for data screening and proposed a method of confidence level analysis to evaluate the quality of data for each study site. It was found that screening window of 15 minutes or 30 minutes was too short due to the large variation in the sampled data; by reporting the data by hour and by peak or off peak period, more than 95 percent of study sites had a high confidence level in the data. The research then resorted to the geographic information system to develop data visualization tools for congestion management. The speed map color-coded level of service for arterials and absolute speed values for freeways, which directly identified congested segments for different times of day. The shortest route map provided comparison between typical freeway routes and the shortest routes by the actual travel time. The travel time contour map showed the accessibility to an area within certain amount of time. With the Bluetooth technique added in to the regional traffic monitoring system, the data analysis and visualization methods proposed in this study will be incorporated into future congestion management process.
