Title: Capacity of U-Turn Movement at Median Openings
Accession Number: 01594583
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The motive of the study is to estimate the capacity of U-turns at uncontrolled median opening keeping an eye on heterogeneous and peculiar driving characteristics prevailing in India. For estimation of capacity Harders’s formula was used and this formula requires three basic parameters, namely, conflicting traffic volume, critical gap and follow-up time. In this regard, data were collected at different uncontrolled median openings of India. A practical approach was developed, by studying the lateral placement of vehicles at the median opening area, for better estimation of conflicting traffic volume. Four different critical gap estimation procedure, namely; modified Raff, maximum likelihood, macroscopic probability equilibrium, and merging behavior were utilized for estimation of critical gap. The follow-up time was measured in the field directly and utilizing the findings of these studies capacities of individual categories of U-turning vehicles were estimated, subsequently the capacity of U-turning traffic stream was calculated. The estimated capacity using Harders’s formula was tested against the field capacity measured in the field using the Kyte’s method. Two statistical parameters were employed and the capacity estimated using the critical gap value obtained from merging behavior approach was found to be in close agreement with the estimated field capacity.
