Abstract:

The Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Specific Pavement Studies (SPS)-2 study, entitled Strategic Study of Structural Factors for Rigid Pavements, represents the most comprehensive set of concrete pavement performance data in the United States. This paper exploits this data set in order to define relevant performance characteristics and intervention thresholds for pavement preservation. The LTPP InfoPave web portal is used to evaluate three performance factors (i.e. roughness, transverse crack count, and load transfer efficiency. In addition, the performance data for the SPS-2 sections are compared to the proposed Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) performance metrics to contrast their application to this data set. The overall results in terms of roughness and transverse crack development suggest that base type is the most significant design factor and that Permeable Asphalt Treated Base (PATB) is the best performing base. The Dense Graded Aggregate Base (DGAB) sections exhibited the highest rate of roughness increase while the Lean Concrete Base (LCB) sections exhibited the highest rate of transverse crack development. The load transfer test results indicate that the PATB is the worst performing base with the greatest loss of load transfer over time. When the proposed FHWA performance criteria are applied to the performance of the SPS-2 projects, it becomes evident that meeting the good criteria for roughness provided the greatest challenge, while the faulting criteria was the easiest requirement to meet. In terms of pavement preservation, the results indicate that of the three performance criteria investigated (i.e. roughness, transverse cracking, and load transfer efficiency) only roughness would be recommended at this time for consideration as an intervention predictor.
