Title: A Case for Enhanced PG Binder Specifications
Accession Number: 01590344
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Reflection cracking performances of three asphalt pavement overlay test sections are compared in this study. Each test section was as similar as possible varying only the binder in the mixture. All three mixtures contained binders meeting a conventional PG64-28 specification with the control meeting an enhanced version of the specification. The two binders not meeting the enhanced specification contained ground tire rubber. One ground tire rubber binder was blended at the asphalt plant, termed the Wet Process. The other ground tire rubber binder was produced at a remote blending facility and transported 700 miles to the hot mix plant, termed the Terminal Blend Process. Each of the three test sections contained approximately 1,000 tons of two inch thick asphalt overlay placed on a cold-milled asphalt surface. Performance of the test sections has been observed for the past five years. The difference in performance between the control and crumb rubber modified pavements over this period has been dramatic. Transverse cracking began in the rubber modified sections after 22 months service and longitudinal cracking began after 29 months. After 56 months of service, transverse cracking has not been observed in the control sections. However, one longitudinal crack was observed in one of the control sections after this period.
