Abstract:

Traffic calming measures are a physical device to manage speed, in particular speed reduction for motor- vehicle traffic, to provide safer environments for pedestrians in residential areas. The effectiveness of traffic calming measures have been evaluated by field studies and computer based experiments, such as driving simulators and microscopic traffic simulation. The previous studies associated with traffic calming measures used either a driving simulator or a microscopic traffic simulation separately. However, driving simulator is used for understanding driver behaviors, but may fail to capture vehicle interactions while microscopic traffic simulation is applied for capturing vehicle interactions over a transportation network, but may fail to represent more realistic driving behaviors. Therefore, this paper proposed an integrated simulation approach for evaluating traffic calming measures considering the advantages of the driving simulator and traffic simulation. Drivers’ behaviors obtained from driving simulator are used for the input of microscopic traffic simulation models to represent more realistic driving behaviors. As an example, roundabouts are considered using the proposed integrated evaluation framework. Two scenarios were evaluated for the scenarios considering three performance measures: traffic operation, safety, and environment. The results showed that a combination of a speed limit sign and a chicane is better than another scenario. The proposed framework using the driving simulator and traffic simulation can serve as a decision supporting tool for evaluating and/or selecting various treatment options for traffic calming measures prior to the actual implementation.
