Thermal Behavior of HMA: From Mixing Plant to Finished Asphalt Layer

Abstract:

The following studies confirm that insulated lorries can ensure a higher homogeneity of hot mix asphalt (HMA) temperature during transportation, i.e. the temperature difference between in-plant-production and paving of the HMA can be reduced. Furthermore it becomes evident, that the conventional, asphalt technological examinations do not depict the monitored temperature-induced heterogeneities of the HMA. In addition the theoretical approach within this paper gives an insight into the thermodynamical processes within the HMA and points out the necessity of an on-site-monitoring of the thermal development of the HMA. If this is not the case, temperature, as a quality-defining factor, cannot be evaluated properly
