Title: Taking Place Attitudes into Travel Behavior Research
Accession Number: 01590103
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship between place attitudes and measurable place attributes in Santa Barbara, California, while accounting for interpersonal and spatial variation. Data sources include a spatially-constrained place attitudes survey, parcel-based land use, business establishment records, and a collection of local geotagged Tweets, from which a spatial measure of happiness was extracted. The relationships among these variables are investigated using a cross-classified multilevel ordinal Structural Equations Modeling (SEM). The authors find that the opportunities people believe a place provides are higher when business establishments are more numerous, areas that provide more natural amenities are considered more attractive, and area residents are generally more familiar with areas that are more attractive and opportunity-rich. The authors also find that Twitter data may provide yet another facet of place attitudes enriching current databases.
Supplemental Notes: This paper was sponsored by TRB committee ADB10 Standing Committee on Traveler Behavior and Values. Alternate title: Taking Place Perception into Travel Behavior Research.
