Record URL: Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: March 22, 2014 saw the deadliest landslide in U.S. history take place near Oso, Washington. 10 million cubic yards gave way from the North Fork Stillaguamish River Valley, burying almost a half mile of State Route (SR) 530 in debris and claiming the lives of 43 people. This article examines the emergency response and recovery efforts as well as the technologies deployed to assist the affected communities. In particular, the authors discuss the role of the State Department of Transportation and the critical collaborations that aided the emergency response. They also describe the efforts to reduce lake levels in order to recover victims and the work conducted to reestablish SR-530 after the disaster.
