Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: A detailed finite element (FE) model of 2012 Toyota Camry (mid-size sedan) was developed at The George Washington University's National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This paper discusses the reverse engineering process used to develop the FE model and the verification and validation of the model. The development of the model in two phases resulted in two versions: one without interior components (seats, dash, steering system, door interiors, etc.) and another with the detailed interior components included. The model without the interiors, but with the main structural components, is suitable for conducting crashworthiness simulations of roadside hardware while the model with the detailed interiors can be used for occupant safety studies as well as evaluation of roadside hardware. Component level verifications were carried out to provide a more reliable model and to expedite the validation process of the fully assembled model. Both model versions are validated against the standard frontal New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash test data and compared in this paper.
