In this paper a new model, named LATUS, is introduced that deals with leisure activity and travel choice specifically. A central notion is that process utility derived from leisure activities emerges from the satisfaction of particular basic needs for leisure. To develop the model, existing need-based theory and concepts of activity generation are refined and extended to take into account habituation, variety seeking and long-term adaptation processes. The model assumes the primary activity as given and predicts leisure activity, location and duration choice and associated satisfaction levels. The model is dynamic and predicts choice behavior and satisfaction in continuous time over a multi-day period and considering in-home as well as out-of-home locations. An application based on simulated data shows how the model can be applied and provides evidence of the face validity of the model. It is concluded that the model offers a more comprehensive account of unique characteristics of leisure activities in agent-based dynamic activity-travel simulations.
